Complex Trauma and PTSD

We specialize in trauma therapy for adults and teens who feel stuck in the lasting effects of painful, overwhelming, or traumatic experiences. Trauma, PTSD, and Complex PTSD (CPTSD) can show up in many ways—including hypervigilance, emotional numbness, panic, intrusive memories, difficulty trusting yourself or others, or a persistent feeling that your nervous system is always on high alert.

Trauma affects more than your thoughts. It can impact the brain, body, relationships, and your overall sense of safety. You may find yourself reacting strongly to situations that seem small, avoiding certain people or experiences, struggling to feel connected, or wondering why you still feel this way even when the danger has passed.
Our approach to trauma treatment goes beyond simply managing symptoms. Usingevidence-based and trauma-focused therapies, including EMDR and Brainspotting, we help clients safely process unresolved experiences, understand their nervous system responses, and build a greater sense of safety and control.

Trauma therapy may help you:

  • Reduce the emotional intensity connected to traumatic memories and experiences
  • Develop grounding and nervous system regulation skills for difficult moments and triggers
  • Decrease hypervigilance, avoidance, and trauma-related anxiety
  • Rebuild a sense of safety and trust in yourself and others
  • Strengthen self-compassion, confidence, and emotional resilience
  • Move forward without feeling defined by what happened to you

What Can Lead to Trauma?

Trauma can result from a single overwhelming event or from experiences that occur repeatedly over time. This may include childhood abuse or neglect, emotional or narcissistic abuse, relationship or betrayal trauma, medical trauma, accidents, sudden loss, violence, or exposure to distressing events.

For first responders and others in high-stress or trauma-exposed professions, repeated exposure to crisis, danger, loss, and human suffering can also have a cumulative impact on the nervous system and emotional well-being.

The effects of trauma can continue long after the experience itself has ended—but they do not have to determine the rest of your life. Specialized trauma treatment can help the brain and nervous system process experiences that have remained unresolved so that the past no longer feels as though it is continually happening in the present.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based
trauma therapy designed to help the brain process distressing memories and
experiences that continue to create emotional or physical reactions in the present.
Unlike traditional talk therapy alone, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation—such as guided eye movements, alternating sounds, or taps—within a structured therapeutic process. This helps the brain reprocess traumatic or distressing experiences so that memories can become less emotionally charged and no longer feel as immediate or overwhelming.
EMDR is widely used in the treatment of PTSD and trauma-related symptoms and may also be helpful for anxiety, panic, phobias, grief, and other distressing life experiences. Rather than erasing memories, EMDR can help change the way those memories are stored and experienced.
For many clients, this means being able to remember what happened without feeling as though they are reliving it.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a gentle yet powerful therapy. It helps people process and release the effects of trauma, stress, and unresolved emotional experiences. It works on the understanding that your gaze affects your emotions. Certain eye positions can access parts of the brain where unprocessed memories and emotions are stored. A trained therapist supports the process. Brainspotting helps bring these hidden experiences to the surface. They can then be safely processed and resolved.

Many clients find Brainspotting especially helpful when they feel “stuck.” They may be overwhelmed by emotions that don’t seem to go away through talking alone. It can reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, trauma, and even physical tension linked to stress. Brainspotting works with both the body and the mind. This allows deep healing to take place. It helps people feel calmer, more grounded, and more connected to themselves. Clients often describe feeling a greater sense of clarity, relief, and empowerment as they move ahead in their lives.
